In Town Cargo Van…Great!!! U Haul Unlike most people who have written a review, my experience with Uhaul was not as painful as I expected. But it did start off on the wrong ...

I’ve moved plenty in my life, although most of it was done before I was ten years old. I was lucky enough to stay in one place for a number of years. My sister and I moved into an apartment last summer, but our resources were limited and our know-how, practically nonexistent. Fortunately, the apartment was only 20 minutes or so away, so we got the job done with numerous trips back and forth in our cars (mostly mine).

After we wised up to the fact that we weren’t living in the most reputable of places, we decided to pull up stakes again, this time heading to a nicer apartment complex. That time we had the benefit of being much closer and having an additional vehicle and set of hands (being as her fiance had moved in with us), but we had less time to get out. We also needed to swing by a furniture store and pick up a dining room set. We decided on the spot to go with U-Haul.

Of course, now I know that U-Haul has built a national chain by being willing to lend their logo to anyone with a pulse and the ability to afford the franchising fee, not necessarily on customer service. But this is the very thing that’s made them so ubiquitous, and which makes it so that when you need a truck (and can’t find the Yellow Pages), you think U-Haul.

My sister and I showed up at the U-Haul place late that morning and asked for a truck. We waited around for probably 45 minutes before we were able to get a truck. It wasn’t especially busy, I just think the guy behind the counter wasn’t the most on-the-ball dude I’ve ever seen. And this wasn’t at one of those stuck-on-the-back-of-a-service-station places - it was the whole nine yards, with several trucks and towing equipment parked around the building, and a facility in the back. The facility offers an air of legitimacy to the whole deal, in my opinion. There’s a U-Haul place in (I think) Hickman, Tennessee, that the guy runs out of his house. We needed to rent a tow dolly after I had a breakdown six hours from home, but if not for that facility, I probably wouldn’t have gone near the place. But I digress.

Anyway, my sister plunked down her debit card for the truck, since she’s the only one who had money in her account at the time. (Ah, the benefits of being paid in tips.) Therefore, she’s the one who drove it. It was actually quite a sight, my girly-girl sister dwarfed inside the smallest orange truck. After resisting the sales drone for the furniture pads and boxes and tape, we were on our way. (We spent a great deal of our waiting time discussing whether or not anyone would spend $36 on rolls of colored tape when they could just scrawl “kitchen” or “master bedroom” on their boxes.)

Much has been said of the decrepit state of the trucks. Our most glaring problems were as follows:

* The edge of the driver’s seat was… caved in, somehow. A section about a foot wide was indented and offered very little buttockal support.

* The fuel gauge fluctuated wildly. It would slowly swing back and forth while we were moving and even when we stopped. I’m sure there’s a good reason for it, although I don’t know what it is.

* The console and dashboard lights didn’t work. This was something we didn’t notice until we were nearly done with the truck - being as it was an in-town move, it wasn’t nearly as disconcerting as it would have been if, say, I’d been driving in the middle of nowhere.

But it got the job done, whatever the case. We were able to pick up the table and chairs, a couch and coffee table, and move our largest furniture within the span of an afternoon, and on the fly. For in-town moves, you could do worse. Like camels. They spit.
