My wife and I reserved a U-haul truck to move across town two weeks before we needed it. When we arrived at the U-haul center, the overworked clerk reluctantly expressed to us that while he was perfectly aware of our truck reservation, no truck would be available. He indicated to us that he became aware of this problem the day before we were scheduled to pick up the truck, but admitted to not bothering to notify us. We were given absolutely no notice and had relied on the reservation.
U-haul’s incompetence forced us to drive back and forth numerous times from the old apartment to our new house with all of our belongings crammed in the back of our cars, or mounted on the roofs of our cars. A king size mattress strapped to a Toyota does not an easy trip make. Needless to say, were were very upset, and what should have been a one-day move, turned into three days of filling our cars in 97 degree Richmond heat, and driving back and forth, both of us missing work to complete the move.
I pitied the stressed-out clerk who had to explain the same scenario to numerous other customers whose trucks also were not reserved. Regardless, the clerk was no help, as he was scrambling to locate trucks for numerous other angry customers. I have had similar experiences with this company in the past, unrelated to this matter, and will never use this company again. Moving is a stressful activity, and U-haul’s failure to honor our reservation, failure to remedy the problem, and inadequate, poor customer service left us in a bind, significantly compounding our frustrations and prolonging what should have been an easy move. U-haul should be ashamed of its sub-par performance.
