U Haul needs an Over Haul U Haul

I’ve rented many U-hauls over the years and I have noticed a trend of declining quality in both their trucks and especially their service. I’ve been in many different parts of the country and I have noticed that some dealers have better equipment then others, this is sometimes true even within the same geographical area. The northeast is particularly a bad area to rent U-Hauls in my epinion. The trucks down south are in better condition overall. From talking to U-Haul people this seems to be a result of the fact that more people are moving south and west then north and east. The good trucks go south and old ones come north because U-Haul has to hire drivers to drive trucks back north and the dealers in the south take these opportunities to get rid of the dogs. All I know for sure is that every time I rent a truck from U-Haul in New Jersey for local moves I get a piece of junk! Out of 4 trucks in three years none had working AC, one kept stalling, one had a bad radio, and another shimmied so bad I couldn’t go over 30mph.

We also used a U-Haul facility as there was a special discount in conjunction with the truck rental. Well, the facility was OK, it was new, but the service was terrible. The people running it just didn’t care at all. They did what they had to and nothing more and were not very helpful when our automatic billing to our credit card got screwed up. I basically had to walk them through it to get it fixed. When I went back to use the facility two years later (it’s the only one in town) it was no longer new and it showed. Their security gate no longer worked and they had no plans to fix it and the place was just a mess.

They have the best rates on rentals and but I guess you get what you pay for.
