Three weeks prior to my moving date of July 1st, 2005, I called the local U-haul office to make a reservation for a truck. They gladly accepted my business and assured me that my truck would be ready and waiting for me at a specific location for which they gave me an address. Just to make sure that everything was processed properly, I called the same U-haul office one week prior to my move date to confirm my reservation and pick up location. It was at this point that I was told by the customer service representative that my pick up location was in fact “to be announced” and I would receive a call from them by 5:00 pm the day before my intended move. By the time 6:00 pm of the day prior to moving arrived, I still hadn’t received my call. I decided instead to call them, and after spending 45 minutes on hold they assured me that they would be in contact within the hour. The next morning came without that confirmation call, and being moving day, I decided to just go to the original location that I was quoted on the phone when I first made the reservation only to find out that the location didn’t actually exist at all! I again called the office, this time from a pay phone since I was on the road trying to pick up my truck, and after another 45 minutes on hold I was finally told to call a different customer service number to get the information that I required. Another 45 minutes went by considering I had to call this number several times before I finally got through a busy signal, to somebody who told me that my Truck was ready and waiting for me to pick up in a completely different city (2 hours away no less). When I explained that my moving day was now half over and I couldn’t possibly make the 4 hour drive there and back to get my truck the customer service representative told me that there was nothing that she could do. I asked her what sort of compensation she would provide for the extreme inconvenience that was being forced on me and she said, ‘we can wave the kilometer restriction on your rental and you will not be charged for extra distance travelled above that stated in the original rental agreement‘ and that was it. (She conveniently did not mention that the extra gas that would be required to make this extra leg of the trip would be my responsibility.) Absolutely nothing else would be done for me. At this point I asked to speak to her supervisor which she rudely refused to do and that ended our conversation. Out of desperation I called the U-haul branch in the city that supposedly had my truck waiting and the customer service representative there explained that my truck was in fact not there and that he informed the office that I had been dealing with of this already. The only person who hadn’t been informed of that small fact was me. Luckily I did not drive all the way there to find this out. As it turns out I had to impose on family to take the day off work to make multiple trips from my point of origin to my point of destination in order to move all of my possessions in a half tonne truck which was a process that lasted well past midnight that night.

I have since spoken to somebody who recently terminated their own employment with U-haul and claimed that when she worked for them taking reservations she was told that she was always to book each reservation regardless of equipment availabilty. The threat of punishment for not complying ultimately led to her decision to leave the company.
