Moving is a real pain, regardless of how far you are going or how much furniture and belongings you have. In my last few moves I have been fortunate enough to have professional do all of the heavy lifting for me. However, the last move that I was involved in did not have that luxury. We had to do it the old-fashioned way: ourselves. Therefore, we had the experience of going and getting the good ‘ol U-Haul truck to aid us in our move. As often happens with U-Haul, it was an adventure from start to finish.

The move in question was fairly long-distance. We started in Lake St. Louis, Missouri and were finishing our trip in south Mississippi. So we went to the local U-Haul rental dealer to pick up our truck. They advertised that they would be open at 8:00am. So we waited. And waited. And waited some more. Around 8:20, the fellow arrived to open the office. You would think that our problems were over, right? WRONG! Apparently this individual had not been fully trained on the U-Haul system. He did not understand the paperwork, which made it difficult for him to explain it to us. In addition, the U-Haul computer was a complete mystery to this guy. After confirming that we had reserved the truck, and entering our information twice, the keys were in our hand…at a little after 9:00am.

As far as the loading and unloading process, the U-Haul was just fine. This truck did not have the automatic lift (which is great if you can get it), but the ramp was just fine. Our rental included a heavy-duty dolly that was perfect for hauling. We simply put the items on the dolly and rolled them right up the ramp into the truck. The U-Haul trucks also feature a nice stacking area above the cab that they call “Mom”s Attic”. I like stacking small boxes in this space, as they are less likely to move around. In general, the truck was great for our loading process.

Around mid-afternoon, we were through loading and ready to begin our cross-country drive. We designated our truck driver, and the driver of the car to follow, and took off. Once we got onto the highway we discovered an interesting fact. The U-Haul truck that we had was only capable of a top speed of 60 MPH. That can be frustrating when the speed limit is 70, and you are facing a ten-hour drive. Actually, it was more like twelve hours due to the speed of the truck! Besides the low speed, the truck rode horribly. It shook and shimmied, and after riding in it for about an hour it was as if you could feel the rough ride compressing your spine. At the end of the trip, I was two inches shorter than when we started.

The cost for the U-Haul is more reasonable than other that you will find. For this long trip (around 600 miles), the rental fee was about $540.00. On top of that, we had fuel costs of about $120.00; we calculated that the truck averaged about seven to eight miles per gallon, which is actually not bad for a truck full of furniture. Other rental companies charge more, and it was certainly less than we would have paid for a professional to handle the job.

U-Haul has a shaky reputation, and it may be deserved. It seems that anyone can become a U-Haul dealer, and most of the time they are only interested in their money. Very few of them care about your move or what they can do to help you in that process. That is not unexpected given the type of people that usually handle the dealerships. Most of them are based in gas stations or rental establishments, with the U-Haul rental as a side venture. I think that U-Haul”s corporate office should take a look at the standards in place, and try to improve their customer service and distributor network.

Overall, moving is a pain regardless of how it is done. If you are in a pinch for money, and cannot afford to hire a professional , my recommendation is to get a U-Haul. They are often less expensive than the competition. But you need to expect poor service from the people that are renting you the truck, and simply consider that as part of your cost. But you will usually get a truck that will hold your belongings well and be in fair working order, with a toll-free number to call if you need assistance. Although U-Haul may cause some heartburn, overall they are better than the other alternatives out there for moving yourself.
