In the last three years I had to use U-Haul service two times. Poor me! My experience with U-Haul trucks and services resembles a nightmare when you’d like to wake up and can not. The first time I came to U-Haul not knowing any better. I reserved a truck a month in advance, paid an $80 deposit, confirmed it a week before move, confirmed the dealership where I’ll be picking it up on the day before move andÂ… No truck.
LESSON # 1. According to U-Haul customer service you reservation and deposit DO NOT guarantee that you’ll get a truck. They give you a right to take one IF it is available!
In my case, there were none. I was transferred to another dealership who supposedly had a truck I needed. Arriving there I heard again "No such truck here". Three dealership and 6 hours later I finally got behind the wheel and drove home to load our things. It was late afternoon on Saturday, the movers already came and left (twice) and I still have to go 400 miles to our new home. Before we started to load the truck I decided to move it a bit closer to the door - and it did not want to start. Two more hours later I learned that my hard won truck has a bad battery and I’m welcome to look for a new one on Monday, as none are available on Sunday. Then came the trouble of returning the grounded truck, getting back the deposit (head office thought it’s dealer’s responsibility and the dealer claimed I must deal with the head office). All in all, I lost several days, had a lot of hassle and no one even said they were sorry for all the troubles I had!
Second time I knew better, but did not have an option. My luck was good and I got a truck, although I got a manual instead of the automatic I requested and was promised. No choice - it’s the only one available! This time I had to drive about 600 miles, at night and I expected trouble. It came. Couple of hours after we started the turning lights quitted. Then the truck broke down completely and had to be towed to the repair facility. We were "lucky" again as it was right in the tollbooth on the bridge so we did not have to wait too long for the tow. But still, experience was distinctly unpleasant.
LESSON # 2. In my experience (granted limited, but 2 out of 2) U-Haul trucks are unreliable and poorly maintained.
CONCLUSION: There small, in-town trucks you can probably risk, but do not go to them if your move is a big and important one. I’ll never deal with U-Haul again even if they’ll be ten times cheaper then competition. If you do, do it at your own risk.
