Let’s see, I have had more than one bad experience with U-Haul %26 I must say that no matter what happens, they never seem to care!
One time I was driving to my mom’s about 2 hours away to pick up a few small things to bring home (one of which was an antique rocking chair that she had rocked my brother %26 I in as kids, very sentimental)
On the way home, I had to drive in about the worst rain storm I have ever been caught in, all the way back. Upon arriving at my house, I discovered that the cargo part of the truck apparently had a leaky roof, and had leaked on my things for the entire 2 hours back to my house. Thankfully the rocking chair survived, it was in the “Grandma’s Attic” portion of the truck. U-Haul did not seem phased or concerned by the leaking, and suggested that if the items were that valuable I should have had them separately insured.
My next experience was moving my stuff from Columbia, MO to Kansas City, MO - about a 2 hour drive. The truck I had would not go over 50 mph %26 was trailing smoke all the way to KC. We made it to the house to unload, and were getting gas before returning the truck when the entire engine just blew. We were stranded at the gas station with a useless truck. It wouldn’t even turn over %26 there was huge pool of oil under the cab. I called U-haul %26 told them that I had filled up the tank %26 was done with their truck %26 they could come pick it up where it sat. They told me that if I left the truck there they would charge me with an abandonment fee!! I had to wait over an hour for the mechanics to show up just so they could tell me that the engine was shot, they were going to have to tow it, and I still had to report to the local U-haul office to complete paperwork for the rental. Not to mention I had to come with my own ride out of there!
It’s hard not to use U-Haul when they practically monopolize the market. I think it’s just a roll of the dice on what kind of truck you will get, I recently had a fairly positive experience with a truck from them.
Just beware that you are taking your chances.
Another thing that really bothers me is that you call to reserve a truck, but they can’t tell you until the DAY BEFORE your move what time your truck will be available! You could be planning on loading your truck at 10am, then they can call you %26 say they won’t have one for you until 4:00!
UHAUL is the WORST!! U Haul Called to confirm reservation 3 times! 3 times they say, yes, you are reserved for the 26'foot truck. Move day comes and no truck! They nast...
