Here is a letter I wrote to U-Haul. It explains how they screwed me. I am posting this because if I have to explain my situation with U-Haul one more time I might get homicidal. Seriously, they make me that mad.

To: Manager of the U-Haul at 749 N. Blackstone Ave. Fresno, CA.

Re: Improper Retrieval of Funds and Subsequent Damages Incurred.

Dear Sir or Madame,

On December 21, 1999, I made a reservation by phone for a 14 foot moving van and an appliance dolly at the U-Haul located at 749 N. Blackstone Ave., Fresno, CA. The rental date was set for December 29, 1999 and the equipment was to be returned to U-Haul on December 30, 1999. The reservation required a credit or debit card number in order for the equipment to be held until the day in which the items were to be rented. There was no statement made to me about funds needing to deducted from the debit card account nor was there any statement made pertaining to the requirements of the reservation other than the requirement of a credit of debit card to hold the reservation.

On December 23, 1999, the above reservation was canceled by phone by myself and another reservation was made for the exact same equipment for the exact same date at the U-Haul located at 4036 E. Ventura Ave., Fresno, CA. The exact requirements and statements pertaining to the reservation stated above, applied in the second reservation made at 4036 E. Ventura. Again, there was no statement made to me about any deposit amount being deducted from my account. When the first reservation was canceled, the customer service representative stated only that the reservation was canceled. The representative gave no cancellation number, name or any other information other than stating that the reservation was canceled. Again, the first reservation made at the U-Haul at 749 N. Blackstone was to my knowledge canceled on December 23, 1999.

On December 29, 1999 I received a notice in the mail that a $120.00 deposit had been collected for a reason that was not stated. There was no date, no business address, business phone number, no initials nor any other identifying mark to indicate when, where, who, or for what reason this amount was collected. I called the U-Haul at

4036 E. Ventura to inquire about the statement and they had no clue as to why I would have such a letter unless it was mailed before I had canceled my first reservation. I did not call the 749 N. Blackstone location since I had been previously told by that location that my reservation was canceled. When I arrived to pick up my moving van and dolly at the U-Haul at 4036 E. Ventura, I supplied the manager with the letter that I had received. Upon his inspection he concluded that the amount must be for a rental reservation that was still active. I immediately instructed him to cancel the still existing reservation at the 749 N. Blackstone location. That same day, I inquired of my financial institution of my account transactions. The bank informed me that on December 23, 1999 an amount of $120.00 was deducted from my account. I informed the bank that this amount was deducted from my account without my authorization. The bank also informed me that because of the unauthorized deduction, that I had incurred overdraft charges totaling $88.00. The bank informed me that if the unauthorized amount had not been deducted from my account, then I would have not incurred any overdraft charges.

In all of the years that I have made reservations with reputable companies such as U-Haul, I have never been charged for a single cent when making a reservation. I use my debit card frequently to make reservations for rooms, cars and moving equipment and I have never been charged a deposit in advance for making a reservation. I am greatly upset by the fact that I was charged in advance for a rental deposit. I am even more upset that I was charged for the deposit without my authorization. By giving your company my credit card number I was only allowing your company to hold that card”s number for use in the event that I did not show up for my reservation. It is very far out of line for your company to charge any amount on any credit/debit card for any reason other than to reimburse yourself for revenue lost due to an unfulfilled reservation. Furthermore, it is poor business practice to not fully disclose your companies policies to your customers especially when financial transactions are involved.

I ask that your company reimburse me for the $88.00 in charges that I incurred from my financial institution since it was your unauthorized deduction of $120.00 that led to the charging of these fees. Any other course of action will be unacceptable. If you feel that my request for reimbursement to be unacceptable, then I will take up the matter with the Better Business Bureau, the State Attorneys Office, and the Federal Trade Commission. Your immediate response to this letter is requested. I also request that your response be in writing and sent to the address below. Any attempt to contact me by phone will not be accepted.
