Few things in life are less fun than moving. I think I would have preferred a root canal! I moved from Houston back to South Florida last year on Memorial Day Weekend. I know, I know, never move on a holiday weekend, but, the UHaul place didn’t have a truck that wasn’t booked for 3 weeks before or for 2 weeks afterward. Since I needed to be back in Florida asap, I took the truck.
I rented a 14 foot truck, and, of course, Uhaul couldn’t honor that. I ended up with a 10 foot truck to haul all my bedding, clothes, 3 tv’s and a cedar chest and about 30 boxes. Thank goodness my friend Billie was available to help me SQUEEZE all this into the tiny back end of this truck! Even with her help, we barely had room to close the door.
Houston to southern FL takes about 22 hours, if you do the speed limit. It took me nearly 28 hours, with two kids and me squeezed into the cab of the truck. That ride was LONG. The kids were alternately hot and cold with the whims of the truck’s air conditioner. Trying to roll down the windows deafened us all..and, the radio in the truck would not work most of the trip.
We were stopped in Louisiana by a trooper who had the grace not to write me a ticket for the expired tags on the truck. He did, however, take UHaul’s number and promise to call them about the problem. I also reported it to the dealer that I turned the truck in to. I’m sure he made that his top priority for the next day! NOT!!!
When I finally got to my destination, my mother was frantic with worry and had already called UHaul to find out if we were broken down somewhere. Of course, I was pushing to get home, trying not to waste more time out on the road. The truck wouldn’t go over 50 the entire way.
Of course, since it took so much longer to get home than I had anticipated, we asked UHaul if we could have an extra day to unpack. The answer was no, even after we called the 800 number and ranted and raved. SO, I had to unpack all my stuff into my mom’s storage shed and then reload it onto my brother’s truck when my house became available. That was one long, hot south FL day!
I am still trying to find a positive experience with UHaul, but, haven’t found it yet.
