Made a reservation for an in-town move (about 30 miles) online after calling them and being assured that the truck will be available on time. Was told that the local U-Haul office will give me a call to let me know when my truck is ready at around 8AM of the morning on my moving day. Well, the moving day came and I’m busy doing some last minute packing and the clock struck 10AM, NO CALL. I call the local office around 10:30AM to ask the status of the truck and am told they would be calling me within 30 minutes to advise me to come down and pick it up. An hour and a half passes and NO CALL. At 12:00PM I call them again and am told that they don’t have any truck available and basically that they don’t have any idea when one would be available, it may or may not be today. The lady I speak with is extremely rude and is talking to me as if she’s got better things to do and I was wasting her time, a REAL B****. Keep in mind this is ON my moving day and I have to hand in the keys to my landlord after inspection by 4PM. Frustrated and angry, I make calls to every U-HAUL number I can find to get a truck before 3PM and finally they find a truck available 45 miles away from my current location! I accept as this is my only choice and go to pickup the truck. Let me tell you about the vehicle, this was a truck you would not want to haul around garbage in. The cab was dirty, the seats were filthy, really bad smelling, the radio was broken, just a piece of junk. Without having much choice, I drive the truck to my apartment and while driving I realize the steering is way off, there are basically no shocks so every little bump in the road feels like a huge NYC pot hole! I finally get it to my apartment and we load all of my stuff in by 3:30PM and hand over the keys to the landlord by 4PM. Not used to driving as big a truck, I get some help from my friend while pulling out of the parking lot in the complex and he spots a huge puddle of oil that has leaked out of the truck! Not wanting to deal with the EVIL customer service and knowing they would be of no help, we bought a few quarts of cheap oil and put it in ourselves just to safely make the next 30 miles. Now with the truck fully loaded with all of your worldly possessions is when the bad alignment/steering gets the truck swinging/rolling and really gets your heart pounding. The acceleration was just awful, the noise in the cab from the old struggling engine was horrible and when stopping at a light, at least two cars would honk behind you with frustration. The whole time I was driving I was praying that I don’t roll off the road or into the next lane of cars. Thankfully the move was very short and did not require more than 30 minutes of drive while the truck was loaded. This experience was a total DISASTER! If it were a move any more than an hour of drive, I would not have taken the chance with all of my possessions in that truck as it was on the verge of falling apart, blowing up or just halting in the middle of the road. The dang thing had 165,000 miles on it! DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT rely on U-Haul for your move. Please do yourself, your family and friends a favor and stay away from these guys along with their vehicles, not only when moving, but change lanes if you happen to see a U-Haul truck ahead of you! STAY FAR, FAR, FAAARRR AWAY!
