Having been in the military, I have had to move around the country a couple of times. More often than not I found it to be more cost effective to rent a truck and move my stuff on my own. The first time I did this I got a U-Haul. I went down to a local furniture store, filled out the paperwork, and signed out a truck thinking that I would get a reliable vehicle to move all my worldly possesions. WRONG!
I lit out around 0530 on the morning of my move. About 200 miles later I was on the side of the road with a broken radiator hose. "No problem.", I thought, "I can fix this myself." I called the service number and asked them if I could just get a hose and put it on then give the reciept to the place I would be turning the vehicle in to and get a refund. They said that would work. 20 minutes later I was back up and running. Then disaster struck.
About 50 miles down the road one of the inside duals blew out. I called the breakdown line again and they dispatched service to me. Three hours later here comes a tire truck and the King of the Bubbas gets out. He takes one look at my truck and says, "Son, this truck won’t make it another 30 miles." I asked him why and he showed me the rest of the tires on the rear end. The outside tires were worn pretty bad but could still put out some mileage, but the other inside dual was down to the bands across the entire tire! Bubba fixed that tire too and said that it was a good thing that he brought two, but he figured he would need it because every U-Haul he worked on had the same problem.
I got to thinking, about 30 minutes after I was back up and running, that this could have been a lot worse. What if both of those tires had blown at the same time. As bad as they looked it could have happened. I probably would have lost the entire rear end of the truck and ended upside down in the ditch. I guess I was just lucky.
