The best part about using UHaul was that I had some great help from friends and family loading and unloading it and that the truck did not break down. I try to be positive: the people at the locations were minimally helpful and I did get everything there in one piece.
Here comes the worst part(s):
1. I called one week before I needed it. I reserved what I wanted, the girl said I could cancel it up until the last minute. Great, thought I. My lease is not settled and I may need to reschedule since this situation is out of my control.
2. Just to make sure she knew what she was talking about and to confirm my reservation, I call back three days later. No no no, they say. You must get approval from the regional office if you want to cancel in fewer than 48 hours.
ROAR ROAR ROAR I say. The regional office never called me in the promised 24-hour time span of me making my reservation. They stink!
so, it gets to be 48 hours from pickup time. my lease is unsettled. i am not a happy camper.
3. I call the national office, and speak to three different reps who don’t know their but from their elbow. Finally I get a manager who contacts the regional office. OK they say, you can reschedule if you need to last minute. whew.
we pick it up at original time. we load. my brother drives it. we unload.
4. The truck was absolutely filthy and there was some trash in the cab when we got in.
5. When we are done unloading, here comes the most irratating part. I HATE THEIR WEBSITE INFORMATION PEOPLE THEY STINK MOST OF ALL! We went to three different locations before we could drop it off. The locations that they have listed on their website are inaccurate. One was a rent-a-car place, another was a hardware store. You do not know this through until you get there. The office that I picked up the UHaul confirmed that these were good places.
My stuff got to where it needed to be, but that is because I had good personal helpers. U-HAUL, U-STINK!
UPDATE JULY 2002:
UHAUL HAS GOTTEN WORSE. ON JUNE 10, 2002 I MADE A RESERVATION ONLINE FOR AN IN TOWN MOVE. I SPOKE TO A PERSON WHO WORKED AT THE UHAUL LOCATION WHERE I WANTED TO PICK IT UP. I GOT HER NAME AND SHE SAID I WAS SET THAT DAY. I WANTED IT FOR JUNE 29. ON JUNE 25, I CALLED AND SHE DENIED RECORD OF MY RESERVATION. I TALKED TO HER MANAGER WHO WAS NOT MUCH BETTER. SHE SAID TO CONTACT THE REGIONAL OFFICE.
SO, I CALLED THE REGIONAL OFFICE IN DESPERATION. THEY SAID THEY’D LOOK INTO IT AND GET BACK TO ME. AS THEY DID NOT, I CALLED THEM AGAIN AND THEY PUT ME ON HOLD FOR 45 MINUTES. IT HAS BEEN 2 DAYS SINCE THEN AND THEY STILL HAVENT CONTACTED ME. I AM BRINGING MY BUSINESS ELSEWHERE.
