In Town Cargo Van…Great!!! U Haul Unlike most people who have written a review, my experience with Uhaul was not as painful as I expected. But it did start off on the wrong ...

Being an optimist, I”m not usually a complainer. But with U-Haul, I”m taking the liberty of stepping out of my comfort zone.

I”ve used U-Haul twice. I don”t really know what possessed me to try it a second time—the first time should have been warning enough. Perhaps I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. Pardon the pun here, but it was a bad move.

A move I had several years ago was an in-town household move with a truck. The most recent one—last week—was a one-way move of some dining room furniture with a trailer and a hitch. In total, we dealt with three different U-Haul dealerships at different times and cities. Unfortunately, none of them knew I write for e-pinions… Here”s the low-down; pros/cons; and of course, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Pros:

–INTERNET QUOTES.

They do have free quotes on their website, which turned out to be accurate when I called 1-800-GO-UHAUL to make my reservations.

– WEBSITE EASE OF USE.

The internet site is easy to navigate and you can get the information you came for quickly.

–SHOW ME THE MONEY (PART I)

If you”ve gotta move and your wallet isn”t very fat, this is a bit cheaper than hiring a to do it for you… but I stress the word ‘bit”.

Cons:

Oh… where to start…

–POOR MANAGEMENT AT LOCAL LEVEL. Even with a reservation from 1-800-U-HAUL, a pick-up appointment, and a deposit, our truck (the last one on the lot) was almost given away to the person in front of us in line. And of course, they had not made reservations or done anything to secure the truck ahead of time. The manager simply was not willing to check on the availability of the truck. Had we not been standing right there to make the correction, it would have been a major inconvenience.

–DISORGANIZATION.

Speaking of inconvenience, there”s the matter of the appointment we had made to have the towing package put on our vehicle so we could pull the trailer last week. I made a 10:00 a.m. appointment. My husband arrived at the U-Haul location 15 minutes early. There were 12 people in front of him in line and only one person behind the desk. He was checking people in, answering phone calls, pulling out the trucks, and having vehicles returned all at the same time. When help arrived, it was useless because they were all brand new employees who had no idea how to run a credit card through, much less be helpful. It took 3 ½ hours for my husband to get the hitch installed. No apology was ever offered. That”s poor service if I ever saw it.

–INCOMPETENCE.

If the U-Haul employee says he can install a towing package, then it”s only fair that we assume he knows how to do it. Wrong-O. When the employee had trouble and asked for help in getting the hitch done correctly, help was very slow coming. I know they were busy (it was a Saturday…) but it sure does slow things down a lot more when nobody knows what they are doing. It was finally ‘rigged” with wires hanging out all over the place. Nice.

–YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR WHAT?!

Padding—which most moves require for the protection of the furniture—costs $10 per dozen! Talk about highway robbery! They”re RENTED, for crying out loud!

–SHOW ME THE MONEY (PART II)

The prices, which I noted in the ‘pros” section above, are listed here as well because if you can afford just a little more, I”d strongly suggest that you have someone move for you, or at least use a different do-it-yourself . It is still expensive to go the U-Haul route and quite frankly, I”d dig pennies and quarters out of my couch for a few weeks so I could afford to use a different service and avoid the hassles.

So we did get moved, and we do have our dining room furniture safe and sound, but it sure was not fun getting it here. I”m tired just thinking about it.

My suggestion: Either use a different do-it-yourself , or get a family owned for in-town moves and a major company for out-of-town moves. Good luck!

All the best to you with your move!

Until next time,

AKVision
