U Haul: Yeah, you probably can after calling Ryder U Haul

U Haul U Haul If you want to know why I prefer renting a truck instead of having a moving company move you, then please read my opinion on Ryder trucks. ...

U Haul, easier than Ryder or Penske U Haul I decided on U-Haul due to the fact that I didn't need $170.00 to just reserve the truck for one day on an in town move. Both Penske and Ryd...

I had one experience with renting a U-Haul truck to move myself and my now-husband’s belongings across the country from Chicago to San Francisco. I can’t really rate the reliability or condition of U-Haul’s equipment because I became so frustrated with dealing with U-Haul over the phone that I gave up before I even got there.

I initially called U-Haul because, after calling the big three self-move companies–U-Haul, Ryder and Penske–the company had the lowest prices. Ugh! Now I know why: because they wouldn’t get business any other way than by being the loss leader.

So, 6 weeks before I was scheduled to move, I booked the truck using U-Haul’s toll-free number that I pulled off the company’s Web site. I received a confirmation number for my 10-foot truck and 1-axle trailer. No problem, right? About 10 days before my move, I called U-Haul to confirm. I must have been on-hold for 30 minutes…the reward for this was getting to speak to a confused clerk who suggested I call the local U-Haul. The local U-Haul was not expecting to have any trucks on that day. Uh-oh.

I was hesitant to change my reservation at this late date. Not only because of the availability at other locations, but also because U-Haul, at the time, had had a cancellation fee for cancellations made after a certain period of time before the needed date. I didn’t want to get charged. But, in the end, I figured that getting charged was better than getting stuck in Illinois for another week. Thank goodness for U-Haul, I didn’t ever see a cancellation fee on my credit card.

I called my local Ryder and reserved the location’s last truck and 1-axle trailer. Phew! I explained to the woman my whole thing with U-Haul and she responded, "Oh yeah, you wouldn’t believe how many people call us looking for trucks at the last minute. They are terrible. They always say that they will have the trucks and they never do."

Hmmmm. Even their competitors know how unreliable they are? Whoo, that’s bad. Scarily enough, a guy showed up to the Ryder office just after me on the day I picked up my truck. He had had a "reservation" with U-Haul, but they didn’t have any trucks!

When I showed up to get my truck, the Ryder rental people were friendly and helpful. The truck was clean and in good condition. We drove it across the country with no problems and the windshield chip we picked up along the way was even seen as "normal wear and tear." Awesome! We’ve rented from Ryder once since then. As usual, no problems.
