For those of you who read my postings regularly I apologize for not making any postings for a few days. I have been moving. Of course this gives me the perfect opportunity to write about the we used.

Our Experience

Up until a day or so before the move we had a Ryder truck lined up. Unfortunately this fell through and we were forced to find another company.

We decided that U-Haul would be our second choice since they have many locations and are comparable in price to Ryder. Bad Idea.

First off, we called around to find a truck. After calling around and finding 3 closed offices and one that had absolutely no trucks to rent out, we finally found one open that said they had trucks available.

We knew we had enough things to move that we really needed a 24 foot truck in order to get everything moved in one trip. Unfortunately, when we got down to the office the biggest truck they had available was a 17 foot. After calling around and finding out that this was the only truck we would be able to find we reluctantly agreed. The truck was $29.95 and 49 cents a mile. We were charged an $80 deposit.

We brought the truck home and started loading it. Though we packed it well, it took two loads to get everything moved. We were moving about 20 miles away so this racked up the miles and at 49 cents a mile we were not happy that we had to make the back and forth trip twice.

After unloading the remaining items from the truck we went out to start the truck to bring it back. Sounds easy right? Wrong! Trucks have a tendency to be a bit hard to start when it has a dead battery! We had to call the 1-800 number to let them know the problem. They said they would send out a service man to fix the truck. Even though it was a local move, it took over an hour to get a service man out to us to fix the truck.

It took long enough for them to get to us that by the time the truck was fixed we were late getting the truck back. At first they wanted to charge us extra for it being late. After arguing with them and having the paperwork for the repair they reluctantly agreed that it was not our fault that their equipment broke down therefore we were not responsible for the extra time. We paid for our rental(which cost us more than it should have since we had to make the extra trip with the smaller truck) and left happy that it was over.

Our Findings

U-Haul says it has offices all over and they do. Unfortunately when you find one, many are closed even though they are supposed to be open 24 hours a day.

They have many sizes of trucks ranging from small to huge 26 foot trucks. Prices range from $9.95 for the small to $29.95(plus mileage) and $39.95(plus mileage) for the larger trucks. Unfortunately, they are not always available when you need them.

Their trucks are pretty clean and comfortable. They come with automatic transmissions and A/C. Unfortunately, their trucks break down at the worst times and it takes too long to get a service man out to your location to fix it.

They come with metal ramps for loading which are attached to the back of the . This is a good idea but they are too narrow for more than one person to fit on at a time. We barely fit our big screen up the ramp and one person had to guide it from the ground because the ramp was not wide enough to accomodate two people and the TV.

I will probably never rent from U-Haul again. Next time I will find another company with better customer service, better equipment and truck availability. Do your homework and find out what company is best for your needs.
