U HAUL…that’s for sure! U Haul

I have had several experiences with U-Haul. Each time I figured they were just having a bad day or something. I have now come to the conclusion that they never have a good day.

Let’s start with a long distance rental. I live in Georgia. I had to drive to Baltimore with my husband. We were to pick up a U-Haul and then drive it and the car back to Georgia after loading up with my mothers belongings. Here’s how the saga begins.

We make a reservation at the Georgia office stating where in Baltimore we would like to pick up the truck. We put down 650 dollars. They tell us that we can pick the truck up at 8am. We left to start the drive to Baltimore. Once in Baltimore, we drove to the U-haul station. After arriving at 8:30 we were told that not only did they not have our reservation, they didn’t have a truck they could give us because all of theirs were being picked up that day for other reservations. We stare blankley at them and show them our receipt saying we already payed. By about 9am they found our reservation, but still said they didn’t have a truck to give us. After several phone calls and this employee getting a good chewing out by a district manager they said we could have one of the trucks. They give us the key and we head to it. The key won’t open the door. They jimmy the door open, but the key won’t start the truck either. Finally around 11am we left there with a truck. We had to wait for them to make a key for the ignition, but they couldn’t get a key for the door…we would have to leave it unlocked.

Once loaded and on the road we discovered that the truck was in terrible shape. I was following my husband in the car. For every quarter tank of gas I used in the car, he used a full tank in the truck. We had to put in oil every 70 miles or so. The speed never made it above 50mph and the were a joke. Then, when we finally did return the truck there was a huge arguement about why the door couldn’t be locked. They seemed upset when we explained all the trouble we had with the truck, and in no way made an attempt to reimburse us for the added expenses that we incured. We passed it off as just a bad day for them.

Now, we are moving from our house. We need a truck. Due to closing on two houses, one day apart that left us with only 24 hours to completely empty out our house. I called U-haul and reserved a truck with my credit card. On Friday morning I called to tell them I would be picking up the truck about an hour early. They informed me that there were no trucks and that they didn’t expect any more in until the following monday. Huh? The man was exstremely rude when he informed me that they did not make reservations for local rentals. I was furious. I did everything except beg this man for a truck. He got angry and told me that it didn’t matter that another employee told me I could reserve it…it wasn’t his fault and that I would just have to wait for monday if I wanted to rent a truck.

I ended up with another rental company that was much easier to deal with and had a far better deal then U-haul had.

These two incidents are in no way the only experiences I’ve had with this company. These were just to give you and idea. I have since promised that I would never use U-haul and that I would make sure my friends were aware of the way things are run through them. Now that I have joined epinions, I figured this was the best way to spread the word on how this company conducts it’s business.
