It doesn’t seem right that I am forced to give U-Haul even one star in creating this review. Let’s just say that if Epinions gave us the option to rate a product with no stars, this would have been it.
This truck couldn’t even go 20 miles, let alone 350
Last month, my sister graduated college. Her boyfriend called U-Haul to rent a trunk to drive their stuff from Connecticut to Pennsylvania. My family and I picked the truck up several days early. A family member in the area had a treadmill they didn’t want, so we were driving to their house to load the treadmill up — then we planned on starting to pack up my sister’s room and get the truck ready for the journey.
We found the U-Haul store in East Hartford with no problem. My Mom and I were in one car, and my father and my husband were driving the U-Haul. My Mom and I were following them, and they were going very slowly on the highway (40 mph.) We figured they were being cautious and didn’t think much of it.
When we arrived at our destination 20 miles away, my husband and father told us that the U-Haul was awful. That it kept bucking and wasn’t running well at all. We called the U-Haul store and they were not sympathetic. We asked if we could bring this unit back and exchange it for another one — but they said they had no other ones available. Yet, they had about a dozen trucks in the parking lot. So we asked, “How can you not have any trucks available for rent, when we saw that you only had tons of them in your parking lot?”
Local rental versus one-way
They explained to us that we had rented a one-way truck. We were taking it and not bringing it back. All of the other trucks were local rentals.
Basically, this is how it was explained to us:
Each U-Haul location is individually owned. They supply the U-Haul trucks for their shop, and they are in charge of keeping them up (since they own them!) As a U-Haul brand location, they also have to rent to people going inter-state. The trucks that are used for inter-state and non-return trips are provided and owned by U-Haul, the national corporation.
These are not kept up by the local stations, therefore, they don’t have as much of a vested interest in maintaining them. Most of the one-way rentals are old and in poor shape.
This is what we experienced.
The East Hartford U-Haul rep told us to bring it back, and said he would have a mechanic take a look under the hood to see what the problem was. We drove back to East Hartford (with the U-Haul bucking the whole time) and the mechanic did some work. Whatever the problem was, he said he had fixed it.
Unleaded in a Diesel engine, not a good plan…
My husband and I left to come home to Philadelphia, and my sister, her boyfriend and my parents were to follow the next day. That day was utter hell for them. They had gotten not a half an hour outside of Hartford, when the U-Haul started bucking and running even more poorly than it had before.
They had to stop about a half an hour outside of Hartford. They found out that the last renter had filled the tank with Unleaded gas, when the truck ran on Diesel. So of course this was one of the problems. The mechanic drained the tank and refilled it with Diesel, and it only helped minimally.
It took them eight hours to drive what should have taken four. And although the switch back to diesel helped, it did little to solve the overall problem of having been rented poor equipment.
At the end of the day, about a half a mile from my house (their final destination), the U-Haul stalled right off the highway. With 150K+ miles on it, it didn’t want to go much further. But it did. They were able to manage to get it running again. The next day, they unloaded the cargo and promptly returned the truck to a local U-Haul station, advising the workers there to “never again rent this vehicle out.” (which I am sure they paid little heed to.)
Customer service, and the cost
On top of their already shot nerves, the customer service here, as well as at the Hartford U-Haul, was poor, at best. And the cost was not “cheap” as they had originally thought it would be. You have to pay for every mile after a certain amount of mileage, and they were hit fairly hard.
The bottom line
Pay for movers, please. Or find another truck rental organization that can ensure you of the quality of their trucks, as well as their customer service. The cost you might save with U-Haul does not make up for the aggravation.
