The horror U Haul When I think of all the bad customer experiences I have had in my life, U-Haul stands out. Unfriendly, slow, unresponsive, downright stupid ...

I’ve used u-haul 4 times without ever having a problem (except the time they forgot to put the dolly I rented into the truck) until this last weekend.

Ahh yes, June 1st. The biggest moving day of the year. Being that it was always fall or late winter when I had moved before, it didn’t even dawn on me that getting a truck would be any different. I called the local dealer and made a reservation one month in advance for a one way move from the ‘burbs of Chicago into the city. They informed me that I’d receive a confirmation call the day before. I don’t know if this is something they started doing recently, but the last times I had rented, I made the reservation and that was that.

Anyhow, I got a call at a quarter to nine p.m. Friday night.

“We don’t have a truck for you right now, but we may have one sometime tomorrow.” says the girl whom I initially made the reservation with.

“What are you talking about? What time tomorrow?” I asked.

“Well, I’m not sure, but you’re first on the list as soon as I get something.” she tells me.

“I can’t sit around and wait all day! I have a plan! I can’t sit in limbo waiting for a truck! I need it at 9 am. What was the point in making a reservation?”

“Well we’ll call you as soon as we get something.”

I hung up the phone in total panic.

I was livid! I had people coming in from out of town to help with my move. I couldn’t have them sitting around all day for a truck that might never show! I wanted to be moved by noon, and now who knew if I was going to be able to move at all?

First thing Saturday morning, I called every truck rental place I could find in the phone book. No dice. No one had anything until the next day. I then began calling places. Lo and behold, there was a place very close to my home with a beautiful 15 ft. truck for $49.99 and first 150 miles free!

Unbelievable! U-Haul was going to charge me $107 plus mileage!

After I was moved and had returned the truck, U-Haul called me at 1 pm to let me know there was now a truck available.

I let her know that I had found a much better deal.

She said she was going to cancel my truck and apologized.

Now I’m waiting to see if they charged me the cancellation fee for the fact that they did not provide the service I had reserved.

Cheap, but make sure you’re not on a timeline U Haul The main beef I have with U-Haul is that your 'reservation' is not really a reservation. If you reserve a truck and they have one there, yo...
