We recently moved about 90 miles from the city to a more rural setting. U-Haul was chosen not only because of past experience, but also because it was one of the few companies that actually existed in our new setting for a one-way trip. We also considered brands such as Ryder and other professional movers.
One thing I would caution our readers about up front is that even if you make a "reservation" with U-Haul, you are NOT guaranteed a truck. We reserved two trucks two weeks ahead of time and found out when returning the trucks this is the case. If you want to use U-Haul, make sure that they spell out the most efficient way of ensuring your getting vehicles.
The reason I am giving U-Haul a non-recommendation is because we had thought we were getting two 17′ trucks and in reality, we had to go to a different store to get a hodge-podge of vehicles (a 14′ and 10′) and trailer (12′) to move our belongings. My wife spent half the day on our way back from the closing of our new house on my cellular phone trying to find out whether we had our trucks or not. We had friends showing up in two hours from pick-up to start the loading process. I should also note that we rented our house for two days after closing to make sure that we could get out of there and it is a good thing that we did, as we had to make a second trip the same evening, adding 180 extra miles to our rental. This was even with two pickup trucks and an extra 12′ trailer our friends had borrowed. Hmm…if only we’d gotten the trucks we had asked for!!!
I am going to say, though, that the manager at the particular store who had gotten the situation dumped in his lap did a great job of trying to accommodate us. If it was not for him, we would be sitting in the street still waiting for our two trucks!
If you are going to be moving yourself across town, you will probably be okay. The local fleets, as they call them, are kept in the rotation more frequently than that of the one-way trips. Long-distance moves depend on when the truck in question is returned by the previous renter, as there are no harsh penalties for late returns.
In the future, I will never, ever use U-Haul again. Though it might have saved us a few hundred bucks, it took a few years off of our life in not knowing whether we would be getting our pre-paid vehicles.
Use caution folks — or U will be hauling U-self with U-own vehicles.
