I’m a fan of U-Haul, if for no other reason than they created the concept of low cost moving solutions. I have used U-Haul twice in the last year. The first time to rent an hauler to bring my daughter’s Mercury home after breaking down some distance away. I paid $250 and the alternatives were 4 times that. I also rented a full size U-Haul truck to bring my daughter’s personal effects cross country when she moved. I paid $1,900 when hiring a would have cost over $6,000.

Because U-Haul has over 15,500 independent dealers and is the largest truck rental company in the world, you might get a piece of equipment that is dinged up, or has some age on it. However, I have always found the equipment in serviceable condition. This number of independent dealers is also one of the reasons you may want to consider using them; it is generally more convenient to find a nearby location to return the equipment when you’re finished. I’ve used other rental companies in the past and found that the price was either the same or higher, and that the incovenience of having to go an extra 100 miles to return the truck made U-Haul a far more attractive rental company.

U-Haul maintains a nice website that makes it very easy to locate dealers and to price your move. We found the pricing portion of the site to be accurate and very helpful.

It has been some time since I’ve used their facilities or their hitch installation service, but U-Haul is among the leaders nationally for both of these products. I also like the fact that U-Haul participates in American relief efforts by providing free short-term solutions for people who have been hit by natural disaster.

The reason U-Haul continues to be the leader is that it typically doesn’t cost anything to be a dealer. While good for providing you with more choices in locations to rent from and return to; in my opinion it does lead to some quality problems in rural areas. You might find a dealer who’s really not that interested in the rental business and these people are frustrating to deal with. That being said, I have had few bad experiences.
