U what? U Haul

I have been using U-Haul, as a facility and to move, help friends move, and to buy boxes from for about 5 years. There are some major ups and downs to this company.

The ups are that they are everywhere. The hours they keep are actually pretty good for me, in that I can go weekends, holidays, and evenings to get at my stuff in or to make a payment. They cut me a great rate on the truck when I rented the unit, I think it was a 20% discount. The stuff they have in store for is a bit pricey, but the boxes are good quality. You can get your tape elsewhere. I liked the staff, but that brings us to the downside.

U-Haul here in Wichita changes hands about once a year. Just when I get to know the staff, everyone is fired, and new people brought in. This also tends to bring changes in rates, timing on payment and dealing with someone who is a corporate drone. Case in point — my belongings were moved to another, smaller unit, when one of the neighboring units became infested. All my stuff was sprayed, but the rent didn’t change, and the guys at the counter don’t seem to care that I wanted my stuff on the first floor. And I had to raise all kinds of noise to find out why my things were moved, and where they had gone to. I am still unsure of the care utilized in this move.

I like the trucks. They handle about as you’d expect a well used rental vehicle to. They are clean, and they are fairly well maintained. The trucks are fairly solid, unlike the Rider vans which have a fiberglass roof. I really prefer not listening to the roof rattle and crack all day. I have used U-Haul for in town moves, Ryder for cross country. I think that when you get down to it, there is no way to make this a pleasant event, and you need to go with who is willing to cut you a better deal.
