Uhaul is a rip off!! U Haul I made my reservation online, and proceeded to wait for my call... Well, not only did these people NOT call me, they were RUDE and HOSTILE ...

U-Haul: The Saga Continues

With my upcoming wedding and relocation for graduate school, my family and I sought out the least expensive way to move my fiancee’s stuff as well as my belongings to our new apartment. Naturally, being good American consumers, we called around and priced several local do-it-your-self . Unfortunately we ended up picking U-Haul, picking the 12′ x 6′ trailer.

Well our adventure began at the local U-Haul dealership where we encountered employees who, among other things, were unclean, unknowledgable, and uncaring. On several occasions we explained the need we had in moving (emphasizing the fact that our drive way was on a hill and that we would need to back into it as we cannot pull a trailer through our yard due to trees. This fact apparently fell on deaf ears. The employees repeated assumed us that the trailer would have no problem reversing up the steepest inclines. After this episode we, stood around waiting another hour as the employees attempted to figure out how to hook the trailer up to our truck and how to ring up the sale (this included several calls to the manager for help). Finally, with all seemingly hooked up we left the dealership with our rented trailer.

Then the fun began.

Upon getting the U-Haul home we went to back it into our drive. Nothing happened. We tried several more times, each with the same result. The trailer froze and caused the truck tires to spin. Thus, we called the dealership only to hear their employees say, “Oh, well, uh…I dunno what happened. Uh. Try unhooking all the wires, that will do it.” We did. Still nothing. We called back to the dealer and explained to them the problem and told them we were going to bring the trailer back as it was clearly defective. To which they said “Oh, uh, no you can’t do that. We close in 10 minutes and we dune don’t want to stay. There is nothing we can do.” During the conversation with them they even called with manager who told them to stay to help us out, yet the workers decided on their own that such curtousy was unacceptable for them. Thus, they refused to help and told us that since we would have the trailer over night that we would still be responsible for paying for it, despite it being broken.

With seemingly nothing else to do, we called U-Haul emergency road-side service. Again we are graced with the presence of another brain-dead employee who couldn’t fathom why the trailer stopped but insisted that it was our fault, that we must have overloaded the trailer. Repeatedly we told the service employee (Victor) that we had just gotten it home and had nothing in it. That concept seemed to blow his mind he even said. “Well then what made it break down?” How were we supposed to know that? Finally have much hassle and much repeating of information to Victor he called a road-side tech, who call us.

The Tech told us something that every U-Haul employee failed to mention prior. The 12′ x 6′ trailer will not back up on an incline. It will bind and lock up if attempted. In fact, he said that they do not reverse well on flat surfaces! He agreed with us that clearly the company had employees lacking in training, product knowledge, and common decency. He told us he would see what he could do about the company from his end. But there was no sense in trying to swap it as the company would charge us for having possession of the trailer despite its state.

And so you wonder, what did we do? We had to park the trailer in the street and walk all the furtuniture down to it (approx. 1,000 ft.) Not much fun with heavy furniture.

If this is the kind of quality that one can expect from U-Haul then perhaps it is time for the company to spell out what the U REALLY stands for…unreliable/unhelpful.
