May 20-22nd, 2005. Concord NH to Buffalo NY
Absolutely horrible all-around experience. Where to start.
Reserved a 17′ truck online several weeks in advance. Upon buying packing supplies from the local U-Haul store just a few days before the move, I asked the clerk to check for my reservation in the system, and there was none. He told me to wait as the online reservations go through a separate system. Fair enough.
The day arrives, and I am told at the last possible hour that Concord does not have the truck, but Manchester (half hour away) does. OK, I had to make a run to Manchester Airport to pick up our driver (a licensed, professional trucker) that night anyways. Get to the Manchester location, and they say they have no 17′ truck. Finally after hemming and hawing, give me a 24′ truck at the same rate, but will not reimburse me NYS Thruway toll difference (24′ is in a truck rate class, 17′ is essentially car rate). Get the truck and it is absolutely filthy in the interior, but attendants brush us off. We drive back to Concord and load that night.
Next morning, ready to leave, and it won’t start. Dead battery. Call customer service, they are absolutely useless. Try to jump truck myself with assistance, no avail. Call customer service again, finally, two hours later, we’re able to start rolling.
Make it to NY rather uneventfully except that we were afraid to stop the engine the entire time at stops. But we make it in, unload, park, settle in for the night. Next morning, go to start it up again, no luck. Two hours and several useless customer service calls later, and we’re finally rolling, but only 10 minutes before the local office closes. Pull up to the office a few minutes before 5:00, and we see an attendant run to the door and lock up. Unfortunately for him he forgot the back, and we got in. Addressed our concerns, offered absolutely no help.
Mind you all these calls placed to customer service were placed on a cell phone (naturally), racking up well over $400 in charges.
While planning my move, I was going to use Penske, but went with U-Haul on the basis that their rate was about $50 lower. Little did I know I’d end up spending $400 more. It’s a mistake I will not make again.
Truck GH 4258B AA96473 AZ should be removed from service. I pity the poor unsuspecting fool who rented it next (drove by the lot a few days later and it was gone). Fortunately, that’s surely one more customer who’ll never return.

- Gas tank inaccurate, mileage less than stated.
- Severe battery problems.
- Several minor/nuisance problems.
- Customer service next to useless.
