We recently moved across the country from Washington State to Maine. We have moved quite a few times in our lives we have always used U-Haul though I don’t know why. We have not been real happy with them but they were easy to get to and have reasonable rates.
Well this trip across country was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. I went ahead an make reservations online for our truck so that we could lock in a rate while they were pretty cheap. They don’t seem to be as expensive in the middle of the winter as they are in spring and summer.
When it came about time for my husband to get the truck he called the place and told them exactly what he would need. Due to the long distance he would be traveling he requested a newer truck so that gas mileage would be better and the truck would be in good shape and he also checked the price
The day came for him to go get his truck. The first thing is it ended up costing more than what they had said it was. Than they showed him to his truck. It was a very old truck that looked like it was on its last leg. He asked the guy about it and said it was the only one one the lot. My husband saw another one up on the hill that was a lot newer and the guy told him that someone else was taking that truck and we could not have it.
My husband took the truck home and got everything loaded in it. They are pretty roomy but the truck was pretty dirty. The next day my husband had to go back to the U-Haul place to get our van put on a trailer to go across country. Low and behold what is still in the parking lot up on the hill but the new truck that no one had rented after all.
By now its too late. We had our whole house for 7 people loaded in that truck and had a deadline to get to Maine for a job so we could not change trucks now.
My husband and my two oldest girls headed out for the great state of Maine 3000 miles away in the dead of winter. I had flew back with the youngest children to get out new house ready. Well they had hardly left the great state of Washington and the knob for the heater broke off. It was stuck on cold so the whole trim it blew cold air down on my husbands feet and there was very little heat in the truck
Ok well they could live with that but the vents were broken and the smell of the exhaust was coming into the truck a good part of the way which was not very pleasant for them. The truck was a gas hog, very slow to gain any speed, made lots and lots of noise and smelled bad.
You are probably wondering how the truck performed other than the above stated problems well it did not. Part way through the trip it stopped working at all. There my family stranded on the side of the highway in the middle of the winter. As luck would have it my husband had the cell phone with him and was able to get hold of the U-Haul company and a guy came out to see what was wrong. They told my husband that a part needed to be replaced and that it had to be ordered so they would put him up in a motel until it was ready
My husband was a little upset by now. He could not sit in a hotel with two kids for a couple of days. He had to be at a job the following week. He ended up having to get our van off the trailer and driving the rest of the way home using our mileage and wear and tear on our van instead of the truck we were paying so much money for.
They had someone fix it and than said they would have this person drive it to our home for us. It was supposed to be delivered on a certain day. The man driving all of our belonging the rest of the way across country kept in contact with us. The night before he was to arrive he calls us and guess what?????? The truck broke down again for the man who fixed it and he could not get it running. Now we are a family of 7 sitting in a house with a card table and sleeping bags and one chair!! We wanted our furniture. Not to mention they were sitting on the side of a highway for a couple of days out in the cold. I hear electronics do not like the cold too well.
Finally they got the truck up and running again and it arrived to us at like 8:00 a couple of days late. By now my husband has had to report back to work so it took a whole week of my husband working all day and having to unload things at night a little at a time. It was suppose to arrive on the weekend so my husband and crew of relative could unload it but since it got there during the week no one else was available to help.
When we did get to unload our things a lot of them were covered in black soot from the exhaust of the truck that was broken. We had to clean things and others were not fixable. At this point we had about had it.
We called U-Haul and complained and they said we could not lodge a formal complaint until we had returned the truck to them. We had by this point found out from the man that drove our truck to us that none of the maintenance had been done on this truck between uses for a very very long time. They just kept renting it out as is. It should not have been allowed to go across town never mind across country.
We took the truck back finally and filled out the forms to lodge a complaint. We called numbers and were told to call other numbers. One office said he had to talk to these people while they were telling him he had to talk to some one else so we just got the major run around.
When we finally spoke to someone who would take our claim we told them we felt we should get some of our money back from this horrible experience. It took forever for them to process our claim and do you want to know what they felt was fair to do for us????? I sure hope you are sitting down because you will most certainly fall over laughing. They gave us $200 in gift certificates to use for a future rental with them!!!!!!!
We had just moved 3000 miles across the country back to our home town where my husband finally got a transfer to. We do not plan on moving for a very very very long time if ever. What did they think we would do with $200 worth of U-Haul gift certificates???? Not to mention we would not use U-Haul again if they were the only company on earth that rented trucks.
I guess you can figure out how many stars U-Haul will get from us. I am not saying they are all bad because we have used them before and not had too many problems. But this whole horrible trip was their fault and I feel they did not live up to their end of the deal to make a customer happy.
If people want to know who I think they should use to move with I don’t really know because I have not researched other companies but I do know that I will tell them never to use U-Haul if they plan to get were they are going with all their earthly belongings in usable shape.
