My fiance and I just moved from Chicago to Naperville this past weekend. I can honestly say it was the worst move of my life, because of U-Haul. We rented a truck on June 8th for a move scheduled June 25th. We requested the van/truck for 24 hours, with a 2pm pickup.
The fine print of the contract stated that the truck had to be returned at 8pm that SAME DAY. We did not notice this until later. At that point, we began calling all over the place for something else. Unable to find any semblance of a moving truck with anyone else, we decided to go ahead and use what we were provided.
The truck was not air-conditioned, despite a big sign on the back of the truck that advertised the truck as such. The right blinker was broken. It was an unsafe vehicle.
Upon return of the truck at 1pm the next day, we were charged $200 for returning the truck a day late on a weekend (we rented on a Friday and returned on a Saturday). Nowhere in the contract is this charge specified and at the bottom of the contract, the notes say “Client requests for 24 hours”
Aside from this litany of grievances, the staff was surly and rude.
I am in the process of fighting this as far as necessary. I am also an attorney, and if necessary will take this to small claims court. This is going to take alot of time and effort, so PLEASE heed my advice and don’t waste your time or money. I normally never take the time to post on these websites, but in this case if I help someone else veto U-Haul, writing this comment was worth it. Good luck!
