Today my wife and I moved back to the city. We have been living on the outskirts of Birmingham for the past seven months in the little town of Montevallo. Due to dreary rain we decided to call on U-Haul to help us make the move in one trip. Except for some dirty sales planning the move went pretty smoothly.

During college I was in a band and we frequently used U-Haul to carry our stuff to the towns we played in. We were pleased with the service and continued to go back to them. This was my first experience renting a truck and the dirty schemes abounded.

We were renting a 24′ truck at the rate of $39.95 per day and $.49 per mile. A little high but with the rain pouring not that high. On signing the paperwork the sales person informed me that there was 1/4 tank of gas in the truck and that I needed to return the truck with at least that much gas in. I agreed and set out with the truck. Two blocks down the road I noticed that the truck only had 1/8 tank of gas (big difference considering that gas would run about $5.00 to make the difference up). I overlooked it thinking that the truck may have been on a hill when the sales person checked it. My wife and I drove on to Montevallo (25 miles away) and on arriving at the cabin realized that the back door was jammed and would not go up. Grr. After talking to at least 8 different very nice people (the 7th one finally let me talk to the manager) I decided to take the truck back and exchange it for a new one.

Now back at the U-Haul shop they gave me the new one and again said that it had 1/4 tank of gas in it. Guess what? Yep, it only had a 1/8 tank in it (do they train them to do that?). I quickly went back in and had them change the agreement. After checking that the back door worked I got in the front seat and decided to read over the agreement more closely. It stated that the miles were 101021.0 when the actual miles were 101021.7. Again I assumed that they would round at the end. Nope. I was charged for 73.8 miles of use.

Upon returning the truck I decided to look around the shop to see what other kinds of "deals" U-Haul had to offer. I found two small rolls of shipping tape with a "free" dispenser for the low price of $5.95. They had large shipping boxes "on sale" for $2.00 each. A bag of shipping peanuts big enough to fit a small (18" square) box for $3.95. How does U-Haul not make money?

All in all the people were very nice. Having to talk to eight different people on the phone before getting an answer was slightly disturbing. Also, not getting a slight discount for the malfunctioning truck was a little unnerving. However, the ride went well and everything made it to where it needed to go. That’s the whole point, right?

So, before you go shopping at U-Haul, stop in at your local Wal-Mart and pick up supplies (I bet they would even let you have some of those boxes that they just get rid of). Let U-Haul take care of the truck just make sure that they aren’t trying to sneak in a little extra profits here and there before you leave the premises.
