We Haul, They Haul, You Haul U Haul

And so it was I presented my shivering little body on or about 7am one bright Wednesday morning at my local U Haul truck rental counter and announced that I was ready to pick up my truck.

After reading all the other negative reviews of U Haul on this site, I half expected the counter person to be surly, the place to be dirty and my pre arranged truck rental to be fouled up so badly that all I would be able to do for the next ten years is think about how horribly U Haul had treated me and how my life would never be the same.

Alas I was spared such torment as the counter person was quite friendly even though it was seven am. She had my rental papers all ready to go and she made sure my truck was ready to go to the point she switched me from the diesel she was going to give me to a regular gas truck because the diesel was having problems running smoothly in the cold, winter air.

We laughed and joked as we finished our transaction; she slapped my papers into a neat little folder and off I went; to spend the rest of the day experiencing the joys of moving, do it yourself style.

The truck was as comfortable as a U Haul can be which means it isnt as comfortable as a car but certainly doesnt ride like a tank. The interior was clean and the radio worked just fine. It sucked up a lot of gasoline but everyone with half a brain knows you arent gonna use a U Haul truck without sucking up a lot of gasoline.

When I made the rental, I was concerned I wouldnt get it back exactly within the twenty four hour limit. My friendly counter person smiled and assured me that as long as I gave them a quick call, there would be no problem at all.

I was back the next morning..tired but feeling the thrill of accomplishment as my moving toils were all but over. She took the keys from me, went outside and checked the mileage as well was the condition of the truck. When she came back in, all was well with the world and I proceeded to get on with the rest of my life; unscarred by my fleeting experience with what is apparently for some people the next best thing to a coven of demons on earth.

I have rented U Haul trucks from various locations for the past 25 years or so. I have NEVER had a problem with any of them other than one time when the sound from the radio came out of only one speaker. For those who only seem to have major problems with this type of service here are my suggestions:

1. Do what you say YOU are going to do. If you want a rental on a certain day then give plenty of time to arrange the rental and then SHOW UP on that day..not the next day or the day before. In addition, dont think you can change the type of equipment at the last moment without a hassle.

2. Be reasonable. If you are going to make several changes in your plans after arranging for the rental then you will have to assume it is not going to go as smoothly as it might have. The truck you rent is not going to be a rolls royce and it is not going to be some comfortable piece of machinery which will solve all your problems with its simple presence in your driveway.

3. The U Haul service system is full of support. If the truck breaks down it will be taken care of. The fact a truck breaks down in the middle of a trip is not an indication that U Haul is a company from hell. They are not magicians and they cant perform miracles. Dont expect them to.

and moving all your possessions from one place to another is not the most pleasant thing to do. Through the use of a little common sense and simply planning, the torment can be reduced to a manageable level.
