U-Haul has been around so long it’s become a generic term, like kleenex and scotch tape, but unlike those items, which are the best of their kind, U-Haul is the worst.
My husband rented a U-Haul truck to move us on a hot day in June. The plan was to load the stuff from the house, pick up the contents of a storage locker, and empty the entire load at the new house. We had hired a few guys to help.
The house we were emptying was at the top of a short hill, with a curvy, house-lined road to the bottom. After the truck was about 2/3 loaded, we heard a scraping noise and some yelling, and the guys in the truck came flying out the back as the truck took off down the hill, lift-gate bouncing. Fortunately, the neighbor two houses down was doing some remodeling and had a dumpster parked in his driveway; our truck took out his mailbox and came to a halt nuzzled against the side of the dumpster.
My husband called U-Haul. The 18-year-old intellectual heavyweight who answered the phone chirped, "Gee, the brakes must have failed or something," and breezily told him that there were no other trucks that could be delivered that day; HE would have to drive it to the service yard, about 20 miles away, for a brake repair job; and no, even though this was a weekday, there was no manager around for him to talk to. The "customer service" person wasn’t interested in making any alternate suggestions or accommodations. So off he went, without brakes (or fire-extinguisher) to the repair yard. He returned three hours later.
Needless to say, we didn’t get the job finished that day, and the rental yard had the nerve to try to charge us for the extra time we kept the truck. They didn’t succeed.
U-Haul needs to do some serious upgrading of both their equipment and their customer service. We could have had a very serious accident, and they were entirely uninterested in either the problem or their customers. Caveat emptor.
