I cannot believe how unpleasant it was to use U-Haul. I am not sure we saved any money doing it, but if we did, I am not at ALL sure that it was worthwhile.
To start with, we had trouble making a reservation. We made an internet reservation for a truck we planned to pick up from the U-Haul facility near our house 10 days ahead of our moving date. We received a confirmation for our reservation, and told that we would be called by 5pm the next day. When we did not get a phone call by 5pm, we called their 800 number, and found out that our confirmed reservation time and location had been changed. We then called our local U-Haul facility, and were told that a smaller truck was available, but not until much later in the day. Finally on the day of the move, we were able to pick it up earlier than they had previous said we could, so after all that sturm und drang we had a truck.
It did not start easily. It did not run easily. It smoked. It was filthy. It had 200,000 miles on it. The handtruck we rented was one of the cheapest ones made, with no wheels or tracks on the rails for sliding heavy loads.
Then we went to return it to the gas station that we had picked it up at. We were supposed to refill the fuel tank, except it was not clear to us what we should fill it with. We wondered if it took diesel fuel, but there was no note on the fuel gauge, or the dashboard, or on the contract, or on the gas cap. On the other hand, there were about 7 or 8 notices about proper tire pressure. The gas station did not sell diesel fuel. We called the toll free number three times but it was busy, so we were unable to ask. I also notice that there are some internet postings from U-Haul customers who thought they had damaged the truck by mistakenly filling it with unleaded gasoline, only to call the 800 number and be told that the warning labels to use only diesel on their truck were incorrect, and that the truck had a gasoline engine. This sort of incompetence and confusion is outrageous!
The gas station attendant was incredibly unhelpful and belligerent, and refused to give us a receipt for returning the truck at the agreed upon time. There would be no record of how far we drove it. No record if or when we had returned it. And they had our credit card number. Incredibly frustrating!
Finally we called and were told to return it at a certain time the next day. We arrived at the agreed upon time the next day, but again there was no way to get a receipt for returning the truck. We had to wait for a considerable amount of time before someone would finally give us a receipt.
I called the regional manager’s office, where I was told by a U-Haul employee that it was company policy to ask for the trucks back when the office was closed, and to not give receipts unless the office was open. Of course, the gas station that rented us the U-Haul was open, but I guess that did not count. They were really pretty rude on the phone, as though I was being an idiot for expecting a receipt for returning the truck when they asked me to. I have rented from many rental companies for many years, and I have NEVER experienced such poor customer service and such outrageous attitudes and policies.
