Here is the situation. We are living in Indiana and moving to Michigan. It is Tuesday; my husband is to start work the next Monday. We should have plenty of time to load up a truck, drive to Michigan and unload the truck. You would think that.
Well, we have moved with U-Haul many times. Every time they give us a truck that looks like it has crossed the river Styx a few times, with that many headed dog chewing on the back every time. When we moved across town, that was not a problem, but when you move to a different state you want a truck that is actually going to make it.
Well, we had a 26-foot truck with a car dolly reserved three weeks ahead of time. We figured there should be no problem. We have never really had a problem getting a truck before. We purchased $300 in boxes from U-Haul and packed all our stuff. The boxes were great, they stack wonderfully.
Well, Tuesday we were going to get and load the truck, Wednesday we were going to make the drive to Michigan and Thursday we were going to unload the truck. That was the plan. Then Tuesday came.
We went to U-Haul and they had a truck. There was one 26-foot truck on the lot. We looked at it and saw that there was a huge whole in the “haul” area. We also saw that the oil hadn’t been changed in 40,000 miles. We went in to get the keys and start heading on our way. We asked the guy, “This truck will make it the 8 hour drive to Michigan, right?”
“Shu it will. Truck ill be the best un you ever seen.” The man behind the counter grunted out.
Well, we went out to start it. This was at 9 am. The truck didn’t start. The truck wouldn’t start. They called the repairman out. Three hours later the truck still wouldn’t start.
“O.K.,” my husband said, “if this thing starts today is it going to start tomorrow?”
“Shu it will. Truck ill be the best un you ever seen.” The man behind the counter grunted out again. “Iffn it don’t start tomorrow, call us an Bob will come out an fix it.”
“Well, will it start on Thursday in Michigan?” My husband asked.
The counter guy just looked at my husband with his jaw slack and said nothing.
At that point, we start searching for a different truck. We called four U-Haul stores in town before we found a place that had a 26-foot truck available. We ended up renting that truck and pulling the truck into our apartment at 3 pm. We still had to load all our stuff onto the truck that night. Needless to say, we were unable to. Because U-haul had that nasty truck for us, we were filling the truck until 3 pm the next day. After that, we still had to drive the 8 hours up to our destination.
On the way up to Michigan, we realized that you couldn’t turn the heater. Whenever the heater was turned on our feet became covered with antifreeze for the heater blew that all over the compartment.
We finally made it up to Michigan, even though the truck wanted to overheat. I can honestly say that I will never move with U-Haul again.
Pros:
1. Easy to find.
2. Cheap.
Cons:
1. Trucks are in horrible shape. The truck may not get you to your destination.
2. May or may not have a truck for you when you get there.
3. May or may not have the right size truck for you when you get there.
4. Trucks are hard to drive.
Overall:
Choose Ryder or any other truck service if you can. U-Haul is not worth the hassle.
