As my moving date was approaching, I stated calling companies renting moving trucks. Calling turned out to be quite a long and ineffective process, so I tried to find something online. Tried Ryder, they have a website, but most of it does not work. Tried U-Haul - it worked. Entered all my information - moving date, size of truck, location. Then they ask you for $105 as a reservation deposit. So, I gave them my credit card number and received a message that it was indeed charged and somebody will contact me. If they will not contact me in 24 hours before the moving, I was supposed to call some 1-800 number myself. I could not calm down and wait till 24 hours before my moving, so I started earlier. The 1-800 number was always busy. I wrote an e-mail to U-Haul customer service - they responded “wait till 24 before…”. Tried calling 1-800-GOUHAUL, somebody answered, immediately put me on hold, then transferred somewhere, again hold, transferred, etc., finally some location (quite not the one I would prefer) and somebody telling me I have a reservation at 7:30. I try telling them that I need it at another time, they tell me to call one of those numbers that are always busy and hang up. Continue calling for two days - nothing. Nobody contacts me meanwhile. Less than 24 hours I finally reach somebody and they tell me that somehow I have a reservation at that location at 7:30, and after I try to say that I need the truck in different location and at different time, they put me on hold and I get transferred to that location. Talking to them proved to be totally useless and I decided that having something in a wrong place at a wrong time is better than having nothing. So I started arranging everything else thinking that I will have a truck at 7:30. Next day, I get up and go to U-Haul, where they tell me that my reservation is at 3:30 pm., not 7:30, and there is nothing they can do, and definitely nothing I can do about it. Advised me again calling those 1-800 numbers. The conversation was in quite a rude style. I asked for the manager, nothing. Asked for their names (they don’t have them written on their uniform), had to wait for reaction for about 15 minutes. Finally, the manager writes me the first names, but no last names. When I ask again for their last names she refuses and says they are the only once with those first names. Once again I ask and she tells me to go outside and look for her name on the entrance. Trying to stay calm I go outside and find her name.
What’s then? I re-arrange everything (loading elevator’s reservations, people helping me move, the whole schedule). At 3:25 I show up at U-Haul again, see enormous line, which moves with a speed of 1 person in 15 minutes. Finally get a truck, but what a truck! Suspension and breaks in a terrible shape. Than I was told that none of the rear lights work (no break and lights). Then a smoke started coming out. All the time the truck was making all kinds of noises. I stopped paying attention to them.
When I was returning my truck, I tried to tell U-Haul representatives about the problems, but they did not listen and told me to call, once again, one of those 1-800 numbers. So, they will rent that truck again, without fixing anything.
I moved, and I am glad it’s over. But U-Haul will be forever in my list of companies that I will avoid at all costs, which I will recommend to everybody. Especially avoid doing anything online, as even some of the U-Haul representatives admitted that it was bad. I will make some efforts to cause enough pain for somebody in U-Haul so that they will take an action regarding all this.
