I have moved locally with U-Haul before and they always gave me the oldest truck on the lot however, it would get the job done. So, when I reserved a one-way truck online I was hesitant that they might stick me with something similar and so my worst case scenario was that I would be unable to exceed 45mph during the move. As it turned out, the worst case was that I would not get a truck at all.
I made my reservation online a couple of weeks in advance. I received a call on Friday, about 18 hours prior to my pick up and I was informed that they were still trying to setup a truck for me and that someone would call me in the morning and let me know when and where to pick up my rental. At around 1pm on Saturday, I starting calling…local said that didn’t know that I had a rental and that they didn’t have available. I called every location within 30 miles. So then they gave me 1-800, 1-800 told me a manager would call me back within 30 minutes. And when they didn’t call me back, I called them back only to get the same response. 1-800 gave me another 1-800 number to call but it would only ring…no answer. So at around 6pm I gave up trying to find someone who could help me. I started again first thing Sunday morning and to get the same answers. On about my tenth attempt at the second 1-800 number, someone actually answered and promptly put me on hold for 30 minutes. When she got back on the line (12:30pm) I was informed that she found me a truck but that it was 45 miles away. I asked if there was some sort of discount for this inconvenience and she said, “No I am not authorized to do that”. I asked her if there was someone there who could make that call? She said, “She won’t be here until Wednesday. Do you won’t me to cancel your rental?”. I told her that I was not able to drive another hour and half out of my way and that at this point I was going to have to make alternate arrangements for my belongings(which are still stuck in storage in another state) to stay here until I can rent another truck. I asked that her manager contact me. Never happened. I called several more times over the next week and talked to a couple of different customer service agents who all told me the same thing, “We didn’t charge you for your rental that you didn’t rent…I will make a report and give to my manager who will be in contact with you within 24hrs.
Why have people answering phones if they can’t make anything happen? Why take a reservation if you can’t honor it. I would’ve gotten the same result if I just showed up on Saturday and asked for a truck which is exactly why I made a GD reservation! Why promise something you never intend to do? I mean the fact that I didn’t get a truck is bad, just plain bad business. But for them to never return my calls to validate my complaint…that no one at U-Haul’s customer service was able or willing to help and that’s just a sad.
If I reserve a rental car it’s there when I pick it up. When I travel by air I make a reservation and they usually have a seat waiting for me or find a way to make it right. That’s all that I was asking for from U-Haul. Just make it right…idiots!
