When in doubt call U HAUL! U Haul

I must share my experience U Haul In reading through many of the reviews on U-Haul I have seen many horror stories, and although I do not doubt that they are totally true, I ...

U Haul is unfamiliar with the concept of “reservation.” U Haul My wife and I reserved a U-haul truck to move across town two weeks before we needed it. When we arrived at the U-haul center, the overwork...

Greetings from sunny and hot Texas, I am slowly getting things in place. This move was so fast paced I am only now relaxing and enjoying my new home. Trying to find a in a mid-sized Iowa community only took two calls. The first call went to that only worked the state of Iowa but the second call was recommended by a friend. This was a family business operating the U-HAUL and would go cross country. This really saved me as they came to check out all I would be moving and decided on the size truck needed. They furnished all the personnel who would be doing the loading of the truck and two drivers who would make the drive and unloading everything at the new house. They also had various sized boxes available that helped in my along with the help of my two daughters.

Trying to sell a townhouse and buying a house both in Texas while I was still in Iowa only took the month of June. After my trip to Salado the end of May I put the townhouse up for sale by owner with my daughter-in-law’s telephone number as she is a realtor living in Houston. She handled all the calls and made the sale. She and my son also made several trip to Salado to check out other property and found this place and knew this was the one for me. With all the pictures my son took showing the house right on the golf course I made the offer and I was ready to move. Thank goodness for cell phones and fax machines it was all over in one weekend.

This is what is so amazing in a small town is when you know the family operating the U-HAUL business and can work out a special deal with moving. I needed to be in Salado on July 6th for the closing of these two properties. I arranged for the U-haul to load up my furniture on July 3rd but to have them keep it on their truck until July 6th then drive to Texas to arrive on the 7th after I was in possession of the house. They agreed to this plan as it kept them in town over the holidays and golf tournaments as this family are great golfers. It also gave me time to drive to Nebraska to visit family before heading for Texas. My oldest daughter agreed to drive me down as she is a teacher and she had free time. Besides she was anxious to see this place as well.

I know this U-HAUL business is not like most where they furnish the personnel instead of doing it yourself. They only do this for an extra service on long distance moving. When I consulted the owner he gave me an estimated figure of cost and as I know the family I felt confident he would not overcharge. The day arrived and we were set for the to come at 9:00 a.m. and it was pouring down rain. We agreed to wait until it eased off and they came at 9:30 a.m. After a few hours it was noted that the truck was not going to hold all my stuff so they decided to pull a trailer holding the extra. By noon they had completed the move and I stopped to make a partial payment of the cost. We then took off with Carroll and Iowa in my rear view mirror. We had excellent weather the whole way and making many stops for visits.

Arriving in Salado on July 6th was a nervous time as we had both closings within an hour of each other. My daughter-in-law had everything worked out ahead of time so it all went off like clock-work. It was quite an accomplishment for her as I could never have completed this without her. We all then had time to relax and celebrate at the outdoor patio of the Mansion Mexican Restaurant with frozen marguerites and fajitas.

The next morning we checked out the new house and we were so amazed when the called at 10:30 a.m. that they were here and needed directions. We soon were unloading and trying to place items in the rooms we thought they should go. Everything came out just fine even with having it sit on the truck for a few extra days. The person who was the truck was very careful and covered all pieces with special blankets so there was no breakage or scratched furniture. The only thing that was missing was a bracket that connected the link springs to my daybed frame. It was not to be found anywhere but I found a place on the internet to order another so it should be coming any day now.

I would recommend using U-HAUL even if you have to do all the and driving yourself. They have all sizes of boxes, covers for mattresses, foam, blankets and a leaflet that helps you with ideas. Since I was not moving big appliances this helped with the loading and unloading. They used dollies to move items into and out of the truck. The person who was loading the truck had 20 years experience so he was careful in as he knew the best way to make all things fit together.

I have been waiting a long time to make this move and once it started to happen it moved very quickly. When thinking about a move and remembering all the people you need to notify I would suggest making a list early and cross off as you complete each one. The are sending me the final bill and that takes care of my move from Iowa to Texas. All systems are on go now and the place is looking more like home.

One final story when I sent my new address to my friend here she said I bought a Doctor’s house we both know. This Doctor was born and raised in Lake City, Iowa where we lived for 30 years. My husband worked with him when he donated money to our hospital and they loved to talk about Salado. One winter when we were here my husband stopped to visit him in this house. After all that I still think my husband is looking out for me and I feel at home in this house. AS MY HUSBAND USED TO SAY-“HOME IS WHERE LETTA LIVES.”
