Why Can’t I Stop?! U Haul

The Long Haul with Uhaul Well moving day turned out to be quite an event. Our Uhaul, which was supposed to be ready for the morning, wasn't. We had to call them all ...

Uhaul has nearly killed me, twice! I have rented Uhauls 3 times, and two of them nearly ended in disaster. Why can’t I stop renting them, and why can’t I stop this truck!?

The first time I didn’t actually rent the truck. A friend was moving from New Jersey to Utah, and I drove. They rented the largest Uhaul available. Things went fairly smoothly (other than the choking stench of stale cigarette smoke emanating from the upholstery) until we got to Kansas.

It was late at night in the biggest thunderstorm I have ever seen. The rain came down so thick I felt like I was driving through a waterfall. The highway was a river, lightning lit up the sky every few seconds, and I swear the thunder was going to shake the truck apart. Luckily I was safe inside my state-of-the-art, safety-inspected Uhaul. Wrong!

First I heard a couple of "Pssst!" noises, like air shooting through a tube. Then I heard a frantic buzzing noise from the dash. I looked down and saw a red light flashing. It said "" on it. I immediately pushed down on the brake pedal, which did next to nothing. I think I swore then, but I don’t remember too clearly. I was distracted by the blinking light and the fact that I had just lost control of my bladder.

Well, through the wonders of down-shifting, and thanks to the fact that the entire state of Kansas has no hill bigger than an gopher mound, I mmanaged to stop the truck. The worked a little, but only when I pushed down on them with all my weight. When I got hold of a Uhaul rep he told me I needed to "reset" the . This involved starting the truck and pushing pedals and flipping switches and chanting until the computer was reset.

Isolated incident? The same thing happened to my brother two years later.

My most recent brush with death occured only a month ago. My wife and I rented a 14′ truck from uhaul. Getting the truck was another fiasco. It was a day late. The only positive thing I have to say is that the manager gave us a hefty discount. When I picked it up I noticed that the frame around the rear-view mirror on the right side was smashed. THe Uhaul guy said not to worry about it and we marked it off as previous damage.

After driving on the freeway I needed to change lanes. I tried to look in the mirror, but the wind had blown the damaged mirror 90 degrees. I could see the back of the mirror and nothing else. There was no way to see the right lane from the driver’s seat. There was absolutely no safe way to change lanes.

Fortunately, my wife was in another car and we had walkie-talkies. She had to tell me when I could get over. Even then, this was not an easy task on a Los Angeles freeway. I pulled over and managed to tape the mirror in place with tape.

Yes, Uhaul is cheap, but next time I will spend a few dollars more and get something safe.
