What a nightmare! I almost had to cancel my move because U-Haul had problems providing the truck I reserved. I will NEVER use this unreliable company again. Read the full story below.
I reserved my truck on the U-Haul website 1 week before my move. I received an email with a confirmation number that said a U-Haul representative will call me on the day before my rental to confirm my details. The email also provided a toll free number in case they hadn’t called by 5:00pm. They had not called by 3:00pm on the day before my rental, so I called the toll free number. I was told that my truck was not ready and that they were waiting for a truck to be returned. They told me they will keep working on it and call me when my truck was ready.
They never called back. I called back at 5:00pm and again 6:30pm. Both times I was told they were still working on it. The next time I called, the customer service center was closed.
I called again the following morning, the day of my rental. I was told that a truck still wasn’t available. “We are working on it and you are on our priority list.” I called every hour on the hour. Finally at 1:30pm, I was told they have a truck available for me. The catch was that I would have to pick it up 1.5 hours away. They knocked $30 off the rental price for my inconvenience.
After arriving back at home 3 hours later, the U-Haul had used over a quarter tank of gas. I called customer service again to ask if I could have the gas return level adjusted to account for the gas used during traveling. They said no, the $30 dollar discount covers it. Between me spending hours on the phone with customer service, traveling 3 hours to pick up a truck and using 15 gallons of gas between my car and the U-Haul at $2.89 per gallon, $30 doesn’t cover it.
Then things really went downhill. She told me she did me a favor getting me a truck and that if I was so unhappy to just return it. She said she had 8 other people waiting for a truck and that I was one of the lucky ones who actually got a truck. She said the website reservation does not guarantee a truck and trucks are provided only if available.
I was speechless. 8 people with reservations were still waiting for a truck! At that point it was very late in the day, so those 8 people were not getting a truck. I asked what happens to those 8 people who made arrangements with friends to move, took the day off work, told their landlord they will be out on a specific date, etc. U-Haul’s response? “Not our problem.” It is also pointless to have website reservations if they are not guaranteed.
The bottom line is that U-Haul just doesn’t care that they are messing with peoples lives. I don’t understand how they stay in business. One of the funniest things I remember was being on hold with customer service. The announcement said, “U-Haul takes the stress out of moving.” Yeah right, U-Haul was by far the most stressful part of moving!
This was my first and definitely my last experience with U-Haul. I will NEVER use U-Haul again.
