U-haul is on the low-end of potential companies to choose from when you need to rent a truck to move. They consistently fail at delivering on their promises and offer the lowest quality equipment. You would be wise to stay away from U-haul and instead use Penske or Budget if either of these 2 competitors are in your area.
I have used U-haul on approximately 5 different occasions over the last 6 years. Like I stated in the paragraph above, not only did I receive poor service and drove poor-quality trucks, I CONSISTENTLY experienced these things. U-Haul continues to fail to suit its customers needs and undoubtedly will be closing its doors soon.
I have been met with long lines, unqualified desk personnel, unreasonable charges (mileage as well as products), and broken trucks. On one occasion, they directed me to drive to a return location about 30 miles away and proceeded to charge me extra mileage charges because I had to drive this extra distance to the closest U-Haul center. I was not able to get my way through speaking w/ the person at the U-haul center or via their 800 number. More recently, in March 2006, the reservation that I made on-line for a one-way move disappeared completely from their system. When I went to pick up on my truck on the morning of my move, I handed them my printed our reservation confirmation, complete with the date, truck size, credit card info, and confirmation number, and they said that it was not in their system. I had to drive to a different U-haul location in my state at the time (NJ) to make a new reservation in person.
On the aforementioned recent move above, I also was given a truck with broken side-view mirrors. When I drove on the highway at higher speeds (above 50MPH), both side view mirrors collapsed and angled inwards, so that I could not see to my left or my right. As you can imagine, it is necessary (and lawfully necessary) to look to the left and to the right when driving on a highway. Since my move was of less than 2 hours in duration, I did not turn back to switch trucks, but instead I had to call and ask my girlfriend to follow my truck and let me know when it was safe to switch into another lane. This was not exactly what I bargained for or what I expected to receive given the exorbitant rental cost.
I am now moving again come February 2006 and have made a reservation with Budget Rent-a-Truck for my one-way move. U-Haul has asserted itself as quite possibly the worst company I have ever done business with. Stay away, my friends.
