So, My husband and I buy a house 2 states away, we were very calculated and planned long and hard for this. We were pre approved for our mortgage, we searched for the perfect house in the perfect area. We bought a second car, we started packing 2 months ahead of time. We wanted a smooth ride. Thats why I figured I would book the U-haul 4 weeks in advance, this way we could get the biggest truck they have with no worry.
Yeah, right.
My husband calls them for a rate and it seems pretty reasonable. 1 day rental for a one way trip with a 26 ft truck with 127 miles was $160. We said OK.
I go down 2 days later to pay in full and guess what? The rate went from $160 to $301! Are they kidding me? No, he assured me that he wasn’t. I asked how this could be and he said "rates change". So I go home and call around, they are all $301. "Its a company wide thing" I was told. FINE! I will pay the !@#$%& $301!
So I book my 26 ft truck 4 weeks in advance, and pay in full. 1 day, YES! 1 day before I am set to pick up the truck and move I get a phone call from the U-Haul guy. "Uh, Mrs. Philipps, I hate to tell you this but I won’t have your truck. I do have a 14 ft though, ok?" NO!
Here is the rest of the conversation:
Me - I need a 26 foot truck, thats why I ordered it. If I needed a 14 ft truck I would have ordered that.
U-Haul - Well, I forgot to order it for you, so you have to take the 14 ft
Me - How am I going to move my house with a 14 ft truck?
U-Haul - Why don’t you make a couple of trips?
Me - WHAT? Are you insane? Why don’t YOU make a couple of trips. I am moving 2 states away!
U-Haul - All right, all right, because it is my mistake I will give you 2 14ft trucks and give you 20% off of the additional truck
Me - CLICK (I was going to make my husband call this lunatic!)
So whatever magic dear old hubby worked we somehow wound up with a 26 ft truck that had an empty tank. No biggie, because the uhaul guy said that we fill it up for our use and then we can return it with the same amount of gas that is in the tank now and he marked it on our contract "Empty gas tank".
We drop off the truck and ask for our $80 deposit back and the new uhaul guy looks at me like i have six heads. He says, "Lady, you drop this thing off with an empty tank and expect me to give you money back?" I won’t go into the conversation that ensued between my husband and the new U-haul guy, but suffice it to say we will just as soon carry our belongings on our back that ever use a uhaul truck again.
